FAQs

A : If you're ready for a challenge that will test your stamina and give your glutes an unforgettable workout, then Kona Crater Trail can't be beat. What starts out as an innocent-looking dirt trail near the Koko Head District Park parking lot, soon gives way to a series of steeper and steeper climbs fashioned out of abandoned railway tracks. Stunning views are your encouragement along the way, along with a promise of uninterrupted 360 degree panoramic views of Hanauma Bay from the top. Which is a good thing to keep you motivated, since by time you get to the summit, you will have climbed 1,050 stairs.
A : If you're planning to hike this challenging yet totally rewarding iconic trail, be sure to plan ahead. Sturdy shoes and enough water to get you up and back are essential. It's also a good idea to go early, before the Hawaiian sun has a chance to get too hot. The trail begins as a dirt path just off the parking lot and gradually builds to steeper sections of stairs until you reach the top. And once you're there, spend some time drinking in the endless views and resting your legs. The total round trip will take between 1 1/2 and 3 hours, depending how long you spend admiring the views from the summit.
