How long does it take to hike the Lanikai Pillboxes?

A : Your journey to the best views on Oahu begins just above lovely Lanikai Beach. Don't let the first 10 yards of climbing through the thick brush dissuade you, once you get going the trail will open up to amazing views that will accompany you the rest of the way to the top. A steady, steep grade will take you to the first old military pillbox bunker in about 30 minutes. From there you can walk along the top of the ridge for another 10 minutes to view the second pillbox. At that point, if you turn around to return, the entire hike takes approximately one hour to ninety minutes round-trip. There is a third pillbox another 30 minutes along the ridge for those who care to explore more.

Where can I park for the Lanikai Pillboxes?

A : If you're planning to drive to the trailhead, take the H-1 freeway from Waikiki west to the Pali Highway. Hop on the Pali and follow it to the east side of the island, then turn right on Kailua Street in the town of Kailua. Follow that until you reach Kawailao Street and turn right. Kawailao will change to Aalapapa Street. Stay on Aalapapa until you reach Ka'elepupu Drive, where you will turn right. Stop at the entrance to the Mid-Pacific Country Club. There you'll find seven parking spots on the right-hand side. Once you park, walk up the side street on the left until you come to the small "Pillbox Hike" sign, signaling the start of the trailhead.
