FAQs

A : This seaside treasure, just off the Kamehameha Highway, is a treasure-trove of turtle watching fun. Lured by the abundant seaweed that thrives in the warm, shallow waters along the coastline, Honu (Hawaiian for green sea turtle) visit this small stretch of sandy shoreline when the surf is quiet. Located just one mile from the famed Waimea Bay, where big wave surfers challenge 30-foot monster swells, the best time to find turtles here is during the summer months when the surf is relatively mild. During the winter months, huge surf prompts turtles to rest elsewhere.
A : Laniakea Beach (also known as Turtle Beach) is not just popular with green sea turtles. Adventurous vacationers and locals often take to the water to swim, snorkel and explore the rocky outcroppings alongside the friendly Honu. The best spot to enter the water is at the far end of the beach, near the turtle protection volunteer station, Malala na Honu. You'll find a small stretch of pristine sand where you can enter the water. Since this area of coastline is susceptible to large swell, surf and riptides, it's not a spot for inexperienced swimmers.
